The excitement and controversy caused by Kenny Scharf’s emergence into the art world along with his friends and fellow art legends Keith Haring and Jean-Michael Basquiat still continues. A leading participant in the intense East Village art scene of the early 1980’s, Scharf’s dynamic, upbeat and visually exuberant paintings have now held the interest of his peers, the fashion world, the international media and, ultimately, museums and fine art venues for more than a decade. Scharf’s ambition to merge the art world with the real world, resulted in his collaboration with Absolut Vodka (1987), Swatch (1994,96), Rosenthal China (1996), ACME Studios (1998), and his own funky collectibles store, the Scharf Schack, in New York City’s SoHo.
