Buzz Aldrin
As a young West Point cadet, BUZZ ALDRIN dreamt of flying the skies. In the Korean War he flew his Sabre Jet as a fighter pilot and shot down two MIG aircraft. Buzz Aldrin developed the technique for orbital space rendezvous while earning his doctorate in Astronautics at MIT hence the nickname "Dr. Rendezvous" when he entered NASA's pioneering astronaut program in the 1960's. As an avid scuba diver, he was the first astronaut to train underwater, and during the Earth-orbiting Gemini 12 mission performed a record-breaking 5 1/2 hour space walk. On July 20, 1969, as Lunar Module Pilot of Apollo 11, Buzz became part of mankind's greatest and unprecedented endeavor of exploration as man first set foot upon another planetary surface - the Moon. Half a billion people comprising the world's largest television-viewing audience in history witnessed this event. Upon taking his first steps in the 1/6 gravity onto the lunar dust, Aldrin uttered, "Magnificent desolation."
