GEORGE SOWDEN was born in Leeds, England in 1942. He received his education at Gloucester College of Art in the School of Architecture from 1960 to 1968, and then moved to Milan shortly thereafter. His first design job, with renowned Italian manufacturer Olivetti, lasted twenty five years. Sowden is perhaps best known as one of the founding members of Memphis, a maverick group of designers, artists and architects whose work defined the post-modern design movement of the 1980s. Sowden established Sowden Design in 1981. Besides artistic pursuits, Sowden’s interests include a love of history and walking.
