Mauricio Valdes
MAURICIO VALDES, born in Mexico City, is an industrial and graphic designer. He is a 2008 RED DOT AWARD winner for his Nova fruit bowl. He studied in Nottingham and in London. Currently he is living in Mexico City and has his own design firm developing furniture, textiles, jewelry, lighting, graphics, and products. He had his own showrooms in San Diego and La Jolla. His first big appearance was at the Milan International Fair in 1996 and at the same time he was opening his own shop KADYRA in Polanco. He has won many awards in Latin America, Mexico, Europe, and has exhibited his work also at Saint-Etienne, France at La Biennale Internationale. Valdes has also won the QUORUM DESIGN AWARD, in the category of commercial spaces, which is the highest award a Mexican can receive. He has also shown his work at the LATIN AMERICAN DESIGN FOUNDATION. In Holland and New York he has worked with objects with MOD. His piece "the el trio chair" was the winner of "Icons of Design" by the Architectural Digest magazine. His furniture designs have also won the Silver award for the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) for furniture design. He has also designed restaurants, bars and residences in Mexico City. His latest interview was with Alessandro Mendini and has been published in articles by Designboom. His latest invitation was DWELL ON DESIGN '09 at the KITCHEN-ECOLOGY recipe for good design, curated by Designboom. His work has been exhibited in the German Design Centre, and at the Museo Universitario Arte Contemporaneo (MUAC), Mexico City. For Mauricio Valdes design is like love, it is universal, everyone can see it, and feel it, but can anyone develop it? Valdes has created the "zero creativity philosophy."
